Where a small business should actually start with AI

If you run a small business, you have probably been told a hundred times that you should be using AI. What nobody tells you is where to start, and that is the bit that actually matters. Here is how I think about it, without the hype.

You do not have a tool problem

There are thousands of AI tools now, and a new one every week promising to change your life. Most of them will not. The useful question is never which tool. It is which small, repetitive part of your week you would happily never do again. Once you know that, the tool almost picks itself.

Start with the jobs you dread

The best place to start is not the exciting stuff. It is the boring, repetitive jobs that quietly eat your time. Answering the same enquiry for the hundredth time. Writing the first draft of something you have been putting off. The admin that swallows a morning before you have done any real work. These are the jobs AI is genuinely good at, and getting one of them off your plate frees up more time than any clever trick.

Pick one thing, not ten

The mistake I see most is people trying to do everything at once, getting overwhelmed, and giving up. You do not need ten AI tools. You need one or two, set up around how you actually work, doing a job you were going to do anyway. Get one thing working, feel the difference, then think about the next.

Keep yourself in the loop

AI is very good at first drafts and very confident when it is wrong. So the sensible way to use it is as a fast assistant, not a replacement for your judgement. Let it do the heavy lifting, then you check, tweak and send. You stay in charge, you just start further down the road.

What starting looks like in practice

In practice, starting well is less about the technology and more about looking honestly at your week and spotting the one job worth handing over. That is the part people find hardest to do alone, which is why I offer a day to do it with you: look at how you work, find the two or three places AI genuinely helps, and set them up before I leave.
